Nanophotomedicine to cure Cancer!

An effective drug to cure the deadly disease like cancer is coming to the country very soon. The medicine is in its final stage of development in India and the Netherlands.

The nanophotomedicine is being developed by the efforts of a group of researchers headed by Dr Manzoor Koyakutty at Amrita Centre for Nanosciences and Molecular Medicine. The phase-I clinical trials in humans will be undertaken in a couple of years. The drug will be available in Indian market in next three to four years.

The drug was tested at the Erasmus Medical Centre in the Netherlands. The nanophotomedicine will work wonderfully in treating tumours and cancer.

The Netherlands-based pharmaceutical company Nano4therapy will undertake the first phase of clinical trial in humans and the drugs will be commercialised later.

The drug can eliminate the tumour cells more effectively than other available therapies. Dr Manzoor said that once the medicine is injected in a patient, it accumulates in tumour tissues. Later, a low power laser light is used to activate the nanomedicine and kill the cancer cells.

He said that the drug is a non-toxic and biocompatible polymer. It is the best alternative to radiation therapy, which causes side-effects to the body. But the nanophotomedicine is an effective drug and it will be available in India at reasonable cost. The price will be later brought down by 60%.
